So

It was recently brought to my attention that saying “be like” is Ebonic and also cultural appropriation if you’re white

Well I’m white and I want to apologize, I think I made posts containing that phrase before I knew it was wrong. I’ll…

This just in: arranging words somewhat differently to mean the same thing is appropriation.

Tumblr, dalies and mentlegen.

Don’t start something you ain’t ready for youngin.

Come at me. I can do this all night.

Doubt it! Don’t have time for basic white folk. Exit stage left with your stale ass.

How exactly does it “sound” wrong when non black use it? Assuming here that they aren’t stupid and using it wrong.

I recall that in the late 90’s “be like” was used by white valley girls or white girls that fit that stereotype.

"And then he’d be like, and then I’d be like, and then she’d be like oh my god."

In fact, growing up, I only ever heard it from white girls and my schools were pretty mixed as far as white and black was concerned (other races, not so much). Until I moved and then my last part of senior year was spent in a predominately white school.

Wait, they’re serious?

…Uh, yeah.

If POC say something is cultural appropriation, who the hell am I, as a white person, to tell them it’s not?

I mean it’s decency 101 here and I should apologize for my mistakes. I don’t think it’s all that ridiculous.

I hate the term “poc”. It just lumps all these diverse groups together into simply “not white” and is horribly US-centric. The US is not the only country in the fucking world.

Also

>implying everyone who isn’t white uses aave
>implying it isn’t a learned dialect
Top kek.

I think you misunderstood me.

In that particular instance, I was referring to just about anything that could be cultural appropriation.

And/or are related to oppressed indigenous groups tells me that something is cultural appropriation, who the hell am I as a white person to tell them it’s not?

It’s decency 101 and I should apologize for my mistakes. I don’t think it’s all that outrageous.

You keep using the term appropriation but I don’t think you understand what it actually means.

Simply using something for the purpose and setting it was created for is not appropriation. AAVE is not an exception—it is merely a learned dialect. Someone who isn’t African-American (blacks, colloquially) merely using it isn’t appropriation. Using it to mock IS.

Your Americentrism is showing.
